Steve Schell- Principal, CTO
Steve most recently served as CTO and Chief Scientist at Heliogen, a leader in development of concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies. During his time on Heliogen’s leadership team, the company grew from 10 employees to over 200, raised several rounds of venture capital, and went public via reverse merger. Steve led the development of Heliogen’s patented closed-loop heliostat tracking control system, several generations of heliostats, and the company’s high-temperature “Gen 3 CSP” demonstration project, for which the US DOE awarded Heliogen $39 million.
Since completing his mechanical engineering degree at Caltech, Steve has spent more than 20 years developing and commercializing new technologies in a variety of leadership positions within startup companies. Prior to his time at Heliogen, Steve was co-founder and CEO of New Matter, where he created an award-winning 3D printer and shipped more than ten thousand units. He has patents in robotic sensor systems, 3D printing, and solar thermal energy, and works as an advisor for several early-stage companies.
